How will I know if I need a root canal?

It’s not always obvious to patients when they have a tooth infection and need a root canal, which is why we always recommend that patients visit our office biannually for routine cleanings and dental exams. If you notice any of the following symptoms, however, we recommend getting in touch with our office to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.

  • Severe tooth pain
  • Sudden tooth sensitivity
  • Darkening of tooth color
  • Swollen or tender gums
  • A loose tooth or teeth

What does a root canal treatment involve?

When harmful bacteria is able to enter a tooth through untreated tooth decay or dental trauma and cause an infection, the inside of the tooth needs to be accessed to treat the infection. This is done by creating a small hole in the top of the tooth and removing the infected dental pulp. The inside of the tooth is then cleaned and sealed. Teeth become weaker once the tissue inside the tooth has been removed, so a dental crown is almost always placed over a tooth after a root canal to support it and protect it from further damage.

Are root canals painful?

Root canals have a reputation for being painful dental treatments, and patients are sometimes hesitant to schedule root canal treatments because they’re afraid of the pain. Fortunately, advancements in dentistry have made root canal therapy seem similar to getting a dental filling from the patient’s perspective. We will use a local anesthetic before your treatment begins to completely numb your teeth and gums so that the entire procedure is painless. Our team will also provide you with aftercare instructions to minimize pain and discomfort as well.
