How to Preserve a Chipped Tooth

Chips are nice to snack on, not something you want to happen to your teeth! Unfortunately, chipped teeth can occur from biting down on hard foods, nighttime grinding, sports injuries, and general wear and tear. The bright side is that if you’re dealing with a chipped tooth, modern dentistry does offer ways to fix it so your tooth looks and feels natural again.

Repairing a Chipped Tooth

The treatment for a chipped tooth depends on how large the chip in question is. If your chip is quite small, then you may just need a filling or some dental bonding to smooth out the tooth’s shape. A dental veneer can also hide a chipped tooth. If your chip is large, then you might need a dental crown.

Keep in mind that fixing a chipped tooth may not only be about how it looks! If you have a very large chip in your tooth, it can result in damage to the inner pulp. This is a bundle of your nerves, blood vessels, and soft connective tissue. With this injury, it’s possible you’ll need root canal therapy to preserve the health and structure of your tooth. A compromised nerve and inner tooth needs to be addressed before placing a restoration on top, like a dental crown.

Contact Your Dentist

Are you currently dealing with a chipped tooth? Then we recommend you contact your dentist to handle the situation sooner rather than later. While a small chip may not look or feel like a dental emergency, it’s beneficial to make sure there isn’t associated damage to your inner tooth that you can’t yet feel. The sooner you get evaluated by your dentist, the less time you’ll spend worrying about the health of your tooth and how it looks.
